HAPPY BIRTHDAY
BARRY!
December 2, 2006 - Barry
Collins'
upcoming 60th [wow, we thought he was older] birthday was as good a reason as any to harass
him.
The
gracefully aging [really old] former screen star
[a legend in his own mind], speedster [yeah,
yeah...past glories] and official
clubhouse caretaker [makes him still feel useful] has still got what it takes
[to make coffee]. If only we
could find a cake that could hold 60 candles. From all us at
Todd's Road, and from special friend P. Wardlow, we wish Barry a
very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

HARVEST HOMECOMING
October 28, 2006 - What a
get-together! Good food, good company! The clubhouse was
packed as everyone came
together after their run to share
conversation and eat pancakes, sausage, fruit, homemade breads, and
lots of other goodies. If you were there we were glad to see
you, and if you weren't we missed you and hope you come out soon.
As an added bonus, the Herald Leader was were there and did a very nice story about the
Stumblers. You can read the story which was published Nov. 5
by clicking
here, or for a pdf version click
here. For

NEW STUMBLERS
September 30, 2006 - Welcome to Allisan Kingston, Casey Gilvin, and
Gayla Cook as first time Stumblers. Gayla confessed she had
actually run with the Stumblers once before, with her cross country
team when she was 13! Welcome back Gayla.

LET IT RAIN, LET IT
RAIN, LET IT RAIN
September 23, 2006 - Or
maybe we should have said, "Rain, rain go away...". Torrential
rains that flooded both urban and rural roads in the area created a
dilemma for many Stumblers. Do they risk the journey out for
the chance to run in heavy rain ... or do they go back to bed?
Sleeping in won out for most of us with only four [choose your
adjective] Stumblers venturing out to the clubhouse. Now
we know for which of us the lure of fresh donuts is especially
strong. Shall we name them? Nah, you'll just have to
come out and read the sign-in book. Sadly the ducky four did
not get their coveted donuts because someone did not bring
them out. Pip, you should have traded days with Virgil, he
could have boated them in.

UPDATE FROM MATT
ROGERS
September 21, 2006
- We received a nice email from Matt Rogers whom some of you will
remember. If we don't see Matt at the Harvest Homecoming
this year, we hope he'll drop by another time when he's in the area.

I was looking for a race
to run when I visit KY for my 25 year HS reunion at Shelby County
and “stumbled” (pun intended) across the TRS website. I will
be home the weekend of October 28 but was planning to race at
Bernheim Forest. If I change my mind I will try to get to the
TRS reunion.
The old newsletters
brought back some great memories, especially the articles about Dave Schaufus and Dennis Haddad/Mike Raftery. I ran XC and track at EKU
as a walk-on when Dave was our graduate assistant coach, and after
graduation moved to Lexington to be a running bum prior to graduate
school. I was a regular hanger-outer at John’s Running Shop and
even worked part time there for a while. I jumped right into the
TRS “offshoot” that met at John’s on Saturdays and Sundays. I still
can’t believe I was able to hang with those guys (for most of the
run anyway) as untalented as I was then and as slow as I am today at
age 43. I also look at some of those old race results and realize
how fast the 40 – 45 age group guys were back then; much faster than
I can handle today. Because I was hooking up with that group, I
never managed to get out to the club house and sign the roster
during those 1980’s golden age days. I won’t say who, but the one
Saturday I was planning to head out there someone left without me
(but Dennis knows who he is) Okay, so I was a little bit late and
may have violated the long standing 5 minute rule. I did eventually
get out there after moving back to Lexington from Arizona around
1992, got the TRS tank top and finally assuaged my guilt for having
raced in a TRS singlet as an unofficial member. That old singlet
doesn’t actually fit anymore; it looks like it was made for a grade
schooler when I put it on now.
Update: I left Lexington
again in 1998 to take a rehabilitation job at a hospital south of
Savannah, Georgia. In June of 2005 I was fortunate enough to get a
great job back in the research field, where I had intended to be all
along. I now live in Holiday, Florida and work in Clearwater at The
Arthritis Research Institute of America (www.preventarthritis.org)
conducting clinical trials of the effects of exercise on people with
osteoarthritis. Eventually I plan to conduct a study on the effects
of long term running on osteoarthritis. I have finally gotten back
to working on my PhD – the reason I moved to Arizona – and will be
able to keep working at ARIA while I pursue that goal. So it seems
an old Stumbler can learn new tricks. Running wise, I finally
finished a marathon in 2004 (John can now stop ribbing me about
dropping out of the 1990 Columbus Marathon), suffered a pelvic
injury and had to take some time off. I am now running around 40 –
65 miles most weeks and very gradually getting back into some
semblance of racing fitness. TRS members are welcome to drop me a
line at
mrogers@*take
this out*preventarthritis.org if they plan to be in the Tampa Bay
area.
Take care,
Matt Rogers

OFTEN SCENE
August 26, 2006 A
typical view along the course in late summer. This is the
tobacco field near the end of the course on Combs Ferry Road this
foggy morning. The tobacco is cut and speared and ready to be
transported to and hung in the barn.

MORE NEW STUMBLERS
July 15, 2006 In spite of the hot and humid weather a lot of
Stumblers just can't miss their weekly fix of running in the
country. And we're getting "first timers" almost every week.
This week was no exception with 4 new Stumblers.
Congratulations to them all and a note that Amanda ran the 15+ mile
"Pit Bull" route her first time out!

STUMBLERS DO WELL AT
BLUEGRASS 10K July 4, 2006, It was hot,
it was humid! Congratulations to all the Stumblers that ran in
this signature race! Many Stumblers did very well, placing
high overall or in their age group. As we all know, even just
finishing is a victory sometimes. Thanks to Marty and Mary for
hosting a Stumbler get together at the "big house" on Limestone.
